De Healing Game betekende een belangrijke overgang voor Van Morrison. Na een periode van creeeren van romantische ballades die succes vonden in de mainstream, voelde Van zich opnieuw genoodzaakt om de jazz en blues geïnspireerde stijl die zijn vroegste werk beïnvloedde, opnieuw te bezoeken. Om dit te bereiken stelde Van een nieuwe band samen met zware hitters als saxofonist Pee Wee Ellis, Georgie Fame en bassist Alec Dankworth. De nieuwe Deluxe Edition bevat het originele album plus twee extra cd’s van zeldzaam en onuitgegeven materiaal met B-kanten, sessie-uitnames en duetten met John Lee Hooker, Carl Perkins en B.B. King. Ook inbegrepen is de eerste officiële release van een optreden op het Montreux Jazz Festival in de zomer van 1997. Morrison heeft hier de touwtjes in handen en schuwt zijn grootste hits voor nummers uit The Healing Game, diepe bezuinigingen uit zijn uitgebreide back catalogue en covers van Ray Charles, Tony Bennett en Sly & The Family Stone.
