Het album werd opgenomen in The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, Californië, en in Studio at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada. Driving Towards the Daylight is een uitgebalanceerd en “back-to-basics”-album dat Bonamassa’s kenmerkende stijl van blues, roots en rock-’n-roll benadrukt.Het album werd geproduceerd door Kevin Shirley (bekend van samenwerkingen met Black Crowes, Aerosmith en Led Zeppelin) en markeert de zevende samenwerking tussen Bonamassa en Shirley in zes jaar tijd.
