Dit Marianne Faithfull verzamelalbum biedt een goed overzicht van de eerste 30 jaar van Marianne’ s carrière op de Decca- en Island-labels. Naast haar bekende nummers ‘As Tears Go By’ en ‘The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan’ bevat dit album een flink aantal zeldzaam en niet eerder uitgebracht materiaal, waaronder live tracks, afwijkende mixen en alternatieve versies. Het merendeel hiervan verschijnt voor het eerst weer op vinyl sinds originele release, zoals o.a. haar laatste Decca 7″ single ‘Something B etter’ / ‘Sister Morphine’ . De titel Songs of Innocence and Experience verwijst naar de verandering in stijl tussen Marianne’s orkestrale folkpop uit de jaren 60 en haar door new wave punk beïnvloede comeback aan het einde van de jaren 70 met ‘Broken English’ met haar kenmerkende zang.
